WTA Finals: Again no Shenzhen! In 2022 we are going to Fort Worth, Texas

As in the previous year, there was uncertainty about the venue for this year's WTA Finals for a long time. Now the decision has been made: The best women of the year will go to Fort Worth, Texas for the end of the season.

As the venue for the WTA Finals, Shenzhen has often not yet been able to benefit from having won the bidding process for the big season finale in 2018. Although the tournament for the best eight women of the season was held in the Chinese city for the first time the following year, the Shenzhen event has been unscheduled since then.

For various reasons: In 2020, the women's season finale fell through due to the rampant COVID-19 pandemic, last year the tense local situation in connection with the pandemic caused the event to be moved from China to Mexico, specifically to Guadalajara. There, too, it will only be a one-time event, as was announced on Tuesday.

Tensions between China and WTA

Because: In 2022 the WTA Finals are going to the USA. The season finale will be held in Fort Worth, Texas. "The 2022 WTA Finals venue will be a fantastic experience for players and fans alike and will provide a worthy conclusion to another exciting season on the Hologic WTA Tour," WTA boss Steve Simons said in a statement.

It is obvious why it is not going back to Shenzhen in 2022: Due to the temporary disappearance of the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai and the continued uncertain situation for the former double champion, there is still a tense relationship between the WTA and China: WTA Events in Accordingly, no events will be held in Middle Kingdom in 2022. Not even the WTA Finals.
