Just because of Garbine Muguruza's matches, the WTA's decision to hold its season-end tournament in Guadalajara was worth it: Mexican fans love Muguruza - and the Spaniard, who has twice been champion at Grand Slam tournaments, returns this love. And after the opening defeat against Karolina Pliskova , things are also going perfectly for Muguruza. They defeated Anett Kontaveit 6: 4 and 6: 4 and moved into the semifinals. There Muguruza meets her Spanish compatriot Paula Badosa.

Even before the Sunday matches it was clear: Kontaveit had her semi-final place. After Karolina Pliskova won her game against Barbora Krejcikova with 0: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 4, Muguruza had to beat Kontaveit to advance. Not an easy undertaking: Kontaveit had won their most recent twelve matches. Muguruza, however, withstood the pressure. And thus fixed the first purely Spanish semifinals at the WTA Finals at all.

In the second group there will be a big showdown tonight between Aryna Sabalenka, who is in first place in the absence of Ashleigh Barty, and Maria Sakkari. Both players have won once (each against Iga Swiatek) and lost once (each against Paula Badosa), the winner has to play against Anett Kontaveit in the semifinals.
