Last year's finalist Andrea Petkovic mastered her opening duel at the traditional tennis tournament at Hamburg's Rothenbaum with ease. The 34-year-old prevailed against local hero Tamara Korpatsch after a concentrated performance 6: 3, 6: 3 and reached the round of 16, in which she now meets the Japanese Misaki Doi.

Eva Lys had previously suffered a defeat. The 20-year-old from Hamburg lost to Maria Carle 5: 7, 6: 3, 2: 6. Overall, the German champion acted too inconsistently to throw the solid Argentine out of rhythm decisively.

Nastasja Schunk (Ludwigshafen) also failed with a 1:6, 4:6 defeat at the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier (Dortmund) and Sabine Lisicki (Berlin), who had qualified for the main draw, were free to play.
