Rafael Nadal has drawn his full attention to the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal. It is uncertain whether the Spaniard will also compete in Cincinnati next week, Nadal primarily wants to defend his Masters title in Canada. He had won in Toronto last year. After a walk-through to kick off, the 18-time major champion could meet Alex de Minaur. The Australian recently won the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Atlanta in an impressive manner.

Dominic Thiem is number two in the event. The Austrian was not lucky: he started either against local hero Denis Shapovalov or Pierre-Hugues Herbert, a man whom Thiem traditionally had problems with. Daniil Medvedev could wait in the quarterfinals according to the seed list.

Alexander Zverev is also found on the lower branch. The German number one, successful in Montreal in 2017, opens against either Marton Fucsovics or Cameron Norrie. Karen Khachanov is a potential quarter-final opponent. The other two Germans in the tableau have had difficult opening opponents: Jan-Lennard Struff has to play against Jo-Wilfreid Tsonga, Peter Gojowczyk, who will play his semi-final at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Washington against Daniil Medvedev, will start against Borna Coric .
