2022 farewells

A young and a long career

At the beginning of the year, 26-year-old Ash Barty announced her retirement from professional sports. After winning the Australian Open, she told her fans via Instagram that she wanted to focus more on her private life in the future.

Also at a Grand Slam tournament we had to say goodbye to an icon of tennis. Serena Williams, who has won a total of 23 singles and 16 doubles Grand Slam tournaments in her career, retired after her third-round match at the US Open. She leaves it open whether we will see her again in Melbourne.

Two heroes retire

In Buenos Aires, Juan Martin Del Potro hung up his racquet or his headband on the tennis net. The giant with the forehand hammer said goodbye to tennis due to recurring injuries.

Another role model played his last match at this year's Laver Cup. Federer's "last dance" was a doubles with his rival and friend Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately, they couldn't win against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe, but that wasn't what brought many to tears.

We've had enough goodbyes this year - let's hope for a more consistent 2023.
