After disqualification: Novak Djokovic leaves the US Open without a greeting

After Novak Djokovic was disqualified in his match against Pablo Carreno Busta at the US Open 2020, the world number one rushed out of the National Tennis Center in New York City without a word.

No one seriously accused Novak Djokovic of intent when the industry leader hit a line judge with a ball at the score of 5: 6 in his round of 16 at the US Open 2020, which then went down. But the rules do not have two opinions in this regard: An offense of this kind is to be punished with disqualification. In addition, Novak Djokovic will not take any points for the ATP world rankings from New York. And also no prize money, as the USTA announced.

Pablo Carreno Busta, Djokovic's opponent, had not seen the incident and had to inform the referee. The discussion lasted ten minutes, then Djokovic shook hands with him. And of course the Spaniard also assumes that his opponent wanted to hit the linesman under any circumstances.

Although the officials had no room for interpretation, a statement by Djokovic about the situation would have been very informative. The man from Belgrade left the National Tennis Center without a press conference, without even the smallest comment to the broadcasting TV station ESPN. All players are obliged to do this, omitting the PC will result in an additional fine. Which Croesus Djokovic will of course not scratch.

No 18th major title for Djokovic yet

Novak Djokovic's trip to the US was a little less arduous than that of the other players (Nole had rented private accommodation), but a lot more expensive (the sum to be shelled out for this accommodation should be well in the six-figure range). And above all not blessed with the desired sporting success: Djokovic had seemed absolutely inviolable in his appearances at the US Open 2020, most recently in the smooth three-set success against Jan-Lennard Struff.

Now the world number one can only aim for his 18th major title in three weeks at the French Open. With a lot of anger in the stomach, so much suggests the fleeting departure of Novak Djokovic from Flushing Meadows.
