This time Joao Fonseca had a big hit in New York.

Joao Fonseca had to cope with a quarter-final trauma at the last Junior Grand Slam tournament of the year. The Brazilian has been able to reach the last eight of a junior major three times so far, but always had to congratulate his opponent on reaching the semi-finals.

This time, with one win in three sets, the 17-year-old mastered the hurdles in the quarter- and semi-finals and met the No. 11 seeded American Learner Tien in the final, who could be sure of the support of the home crowd. But the No. 7 seed in the tournament was also able to rely on a considerable fan base from Brazil and won 4:6, 6:4, 6:3 after just under two hours of play

The unseeded Katherine Hui delivered a sensational breakthrough among the juniors. The American is currently only ranked 563rd in the youth world rankings and only started in the main field thanks to a wildcard that she received for winning the title at the U18 Championships in the USA. The 18-year-old stormed into the final without winning a set and faced No. 9 seeded Czech Tereza Valentova. Hui didn't lose a set in the final either and won 6:4, 6:4 after 1:43 hours.
