Medvedev had chosen a different tactic compared to the two matches he lost very easily against Alcaraz in Indian Wells and Wimbledon in 2023. The Russian acted more offensively and didn't let his opponent's stops take him by surprise too often when returning. The first set was decided in a tiebreak. Medvedev won this 7:3. The 2021 champion immediately took the momentum against his successor and managed the first break of the match in the second game of the second act.

The second sentence was a clear matter for Medvedev. In the third round, Alcaraz briefly raised the hopes of his fans - but ultimately it was Medvedev who managed the decisive break to make it 4-2 in the fourth set. The very last game was once again a drama: Alcaraz won 15:40, Medvedev fended off the break chances. And secured his third place in the final in New York City with the fourth match point.

The final on Sunday is now against Novak Djokovic. The Serb, number one in the world again as of Monday, won against Ben Shelton with small problems in the end with 6:3, 6:2 and 7:6 (4). This is the 36th time Djokovic has reached a Grand Slam singles final and is aiming for his 24th title.
