It's raining prominent cancellations this Tuesday afternoon for the organizers of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami. After the world number three, Rafael Nadal, had already canceled his start at the tournament in the USA in the early evening - the Spaniard wanted to fully relax and prepare for the European clay court season - Dominic Thiem will now also be absent.
The Austrian was listed as a drop-out when the starter list was updated for the ATP Masters 1000 event. Together with Nick Kygios, Richard Gasquet, Pablo Andujar and Pablo Cuevas. A few days ago, Roger Federer, who had only returned to the ATP tour in Doha after a break of more than a year, canceled his start in Miami. The Swiss won the title in 2019, in 2020 the event was canceled due to COVID-19.
Thiem drop-out raises questions
While the reasons for the cancellation are clear for the Swiss - Federer wants to prepare for his season highlights Wimbledon and Olympia - Dominic Thiem's cancellation comes as a surprise. Why the Austrian will not travel to Miami was unclear at the time the entry list update was published.
The Austrian had failed at the beginning of the last edition of the Miami event, before the world number four had won his first and so far only ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells.
