The new number one and currently the outstanding player in the world is taking a break after the "Sunshine Double": Iga Swiatek canceled her planned start in Charleston/South Carolina the day after the triumph in Miami. The Pole, who will take the top spot in the WTA ranking on Monday, is postponing the start of the clay court season after the exhausting weeks.

Swiatek (20) recently won the top tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami one after the other. "I'm really sorry, but after the marathon of three tournaments where I played in the final, I feel a bit injured in one arm," she said. The injury was "not bad", but she had to rest, explained the 2020 French Open winner.

Swiatek new number one from Monday

On Saturday, in the final in Florida, Swiatek outclassed four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka (Japan) in 1:19 hours 6: 4, 6: 0. It was her 17th win in a row. She takes over number one in the world rankings from the Australian Ashleigh Barty, who is no longer listed after her surprising resignation from Monday.

Swiatek had made the double in Indian Wells and Miami as the fourth and youngest player after Steffi Graf (1994/1996), Kim Clijsters (2005) and Victoria Azarenka (2016). "I feel quite privileged to be one of those players, I wouldn't have dreamed of it a few years ago," said Swiatek.
