WTA Rome: Iga Swiatek beats strong Angelique Kerber
Iga Swiatek has advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Rome with a 7:5 and 6:3 win against Angelique Kerber.

Despite a good performance, former world number one Angelique Kerber missed a surprise against the world's best tennis player. In the round of 16 of the WTA tournament in Rome, the 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner lost to Polish top favorite Iga Swiatek 5:7, 3:6.
Kerber, who had not lost a set in the first three rounds, was nevertheless able to count the dress rehearsal for the French Open, which begins on May 20, as a success. Kerber had only won three matches this year at the tournament in Indian Wells in March, where she was also eliminated in the round of 16.
Kerber also loses third duel with Swiatek
In the third duel with Kerber, the world number one Swiatek, who is 14 years younger and has already won the tournament in Rome twice, achieved her third victory. Kerber, whose best result in Rome was the semi-final in 2012, held up very well, especially in the first set, and appeared to be in strong form.
Coco Gauff also had to fight hard to reach the round of 16 in Rome. The reigning US Open champion ultimately beat Paula Badosa 5:7, 6:4 and 6:1.
