Carla Suarez Navarro is allowed to serve at her fourth Olympic Games on her farewell tour after surviving cancer. The 32-year-old was nominated by the Spanish Association for the Summer Games in Tokyo (from July 23). As planned before she fell ill, she is contesting the last season of her career.
"I am very happy to represent Spain one last time at the Olympic Games - the greatest honor for an athlete," wrote Suarez Navarro on Twitter. She had already participated in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016.
Round of 16 best result so far
In August 2020, Suarez Navarro was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in the lymphatic system. The so-called Hodgkin lymphoma had made six months of chemotherapy and a break from tennis inevitable. At the end of April, the former number six announced to the world that she had overcome cancer.
Her best result in her three Olympic appearances so far was reaching the round of 16 in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. There it was for the lady from the Canary Islands against the American Madison Keys in three sets. In her comeback at the French Open, Suarez Navarro had just lost in the first round at the beginning of June. At Wimbledon she will meet the world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia.
