Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki will meet again. On that place.

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark will return to the tennis stage next spring for one last match - and she has chosen her "great friend" Angelique Kerber as her opponent for her big farewell. This was announced by the 2018 Australian Open winner on Twitter.

"I lost the last time we met. So I'm working hard for a rematch," said Wozniacki. The show match of the two former world number one will take place on February 9th in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. Wozniacki had ended her career in 2020, in which she won 30 WTA titles and was number one in the world for a total of 71 weeks. In June, she gave birth to their first daughter, Olivia.

Goosebumps atmosphere for farewell?

Their paths had crossed again and again with Kerber. Among other things, Wozniacki from Kiel beat Wozniacki in the semifinals of the US Open in 2016 before she won the title in New York. Wozniacki originally planned her departure with a match against her friend Serena Williams (USA), the game was canceled due to the pandemic. All Corona restrictions have now been lifted in Denmark, so up to 12,500 viewers can watch the game live.

Wozniacki had played her last official match on the WTA tour at the Austtalian Open in 2020. The former world number one failed there in the third round against the Tunisian Ons Jabeur. The premature end of the career of the Australian Open winner from 2018 is probably also due to the persistent health complaints of the Dane. The drop in physical and psychological stress after the end of her career would have had a positive effect on her health, Wozniacki said at the end of last year.

Kerber versus Wozniacki

Now the former world number one has apparently packed her competitive streak again, as the - probably not without a wink - challenge to exhibition opponent Angelique Kerber suggests. After the extremely mediocre first two thirds of the season, the German was able to post quite good results recently, but failed at the US Open by the later finalist Leylah Fernandez.

Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki are not only connected by their friendship away from the tour, but by a thoroughly competitive past. The two women competed 15 times in total, with eight wins, the three-time major winner Kerber has a wafer-thin edge. And Caroline Wozniacki? In her farewell match she has the chance to balance things out.
