Former world number four Anke Huber sees German women's tennis in transition and currently does not see a successor for the generation around Angelique Kerber. "We always had that," said the 47-year-old at Eurosport, referring to the time after Steffi Graf, Barbara Rittner and her.

"Then there was a gap of a few years - and Kerber, Petkovic and Co. didn't follow immediately," added Huber: "It is certain that there is currently no one who could close the gap immediately, there has to be let's be honest."

Currently only two Germans in the top 100

Huber, sporting director of the WTA tournament starting on April 18 in Stuttgart, does not consider the situation unusual. "It's not like the top 10 players move up every five years in the USA or France, for example." Usually two or three players from one country come up, said the former finalist of the Australian Open: "They push each other, but then there is often a break for a few years." She hopes that this phase "only lasts two or three years for us this time before young players catch their attention".

The three-time Grand Slam winner Kerber is currently ranked 16th in the world at the age of 34, the only other German player in the top 100 is Andrea Petkovic (34) at 68. 22-year-old Jule Niemeier then follows as number 110.
