The "Newcombe Medal" was first awarded in 2010 and is named after the Australian tennis legend John Newcombe. For the past nine years, the best Australian tennis players have been honored - in 2019 Ashleigh Barty once again received this honor.

Already in 2017 and 2018, the world number one won this award, after the outstanding season in 2019 with victories at the French Open and the WTA Finals, the recent award for Barty was anything but surprising. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old was more than pleased.

Shared leader

"I'm incredibly grateful to be here tonight, and I'm extremely happy to have had such incredible support throughout my career," said Barty at the awards ceremony in Melbourne. The world number one ranked Dylan Alcott (wheelchair tennis player), Alex de Minaur, John Millman and Ajla Tomljanovic on the courts.

With her third success en suite, Barty also moved closer to Samantha Stosur. The 35-year-old secured the first three "Newcombe Medals" - with a new profit next year, Barty would therefore go past her compatriot. Impossible, this does not seem to be the case.
