Nick Kyrgios' amazing week in Acapulco culminated in the final against Alexander Zverev: The Australian, who on the way to the final, defeated tournament favorite Rafael Nadal, then Stan Wawrinka and in the final round John Isner, won 6: 3 and 6: 4 through.
After winning the first set, Kyrgios made another break at the start of round two. Zverev equalized, but subsequently gave the Hamburg native the chance to 3-1. Kyrgios did better, turning his opponent 40-0 in his break into a 3-2 break. After that, Zverev got even smaller chances, but Kyrgios served for his first tournament victory since Brisbane in 2018.
It was the stop balls in particular that caused major problems for Zverev. In addition, the German was not very efficient at breakballs: Zverev was only able to exploit one of eight opportunities. German number one was charming and witty in the on-court interview - even if Alexander Zverev didn't really know who was playing what role in the Australian team.
Kyrgios took a relaxed note of the explanations and, in turn, complimented Zverev. With the success in Acapulco, the man from Canberra will also make up 41 places in the ATP world rankings. As of Monday, Kyrgios will be number 31 on the charts.
