Ruud beat Cameron Norrie 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 on Wednesday evening and thus preserved his chances of reaching the semi-finals. He will meet Andrey Rublev on Friday. Novak Djokovic is already the group winner.
"The first sentence went away too quickly," said Ruud afterwards. "Cameron has that flat backhand that is easy to get under with a lot of spin. It's very dangerous on this fast course." A lot of things spin very quickly in tennis, including his case.
In the end, Ruud had to tremble again when he failed to use three match points at 5: 4 and 40: 0, Norrie was fighting hard to keep up. "Then you tense up something," admitted Ruud.
Ruud had to adjust to a new opponent at short notice: Stefanos Tsitsipas had withdrawn injured and had been struggling with elbow problems for weeks. After Matteo Berrettini, he is already the second player in the tournament who was unable to continue playing.
