It's been almost four years since Daniil Medvedev's star really rose on Center Court at Wimbledon. The then 21-year-old took the three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka out of the competition in the first round and made headlines for the first time in his career.
Medvedev is now in second place in the world and is one of the top favorites for the title at every tournament. Things are not much different in Halle / Westphalia, where the Russian leads the tableau. With his good serve and straight strokes, Medvedev's game seems to be predestined for grass, but he has not yet reached a final on the green.
Struff with a strong clay court season
This also applies to Jan-Lennard Struff, who will challenge Medvedev to kick off in Halle. The Warsteiner can, however, look back on a strong clay court season, during which he reached his only final in Munich and the last sixteen at the French Open.
The 31-year-old is correspondingly confident in the duel with the world number two. "This is my home tournament. I'll really accelerate and apply pressure here. I want to finally play in the hot tournament phase," said Struff.
Betway's bookmakers, however, see Medvedev at an advantage with odds of 1.27: 1. A rate of 3.75: 1 is offered for Struff's victory.
