Alexander Zverev beat Dominik Koepfer in three sets

The switch from sand to grass is generally considered to be the most difficult of the entire year in tennis, a five-set defeat in the semi-finals of the French Open is probably not the necessary motivation booster - and yet Alexander Zverev celebrated just four days after his bankruptcy against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Stade Roland Garros a successful lawn premiere.

The 24-year-old prevailed in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Halle / Westphalia against compatriot Dominik Koepfer 6: 4, 3: 6 and 6: 3. Zverev showed his class in phases, but the Hamburg native made many mistakes over the entire season, especially with the forehand.

Rublev beats Khachanov

Ultimately, however, it should be enough for the contested opening success at the German lawn classic. Zverev now meets Ugo Humbert or Sam Querrey in the second round.

A few hours earlier, Andrey Rublev had asserted himself 6: 3 and 7: 6 (5) in a purely Russian duel against Karen Khachanov on the largest square of the facility. The country's number one, Daniil Medvedev, had to admit defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in two rounds .
