It was not without a certain irony that Andrey Rublev concluded the first set of his game against Philipp Kohlschreiber with a terrific backhand slice along the line. That Rublev, who basically works on every ball, with fore and with backhand. The role of the fine spirit in the first quarter-finals of the ATP Tour 500 tournament in HalleWestfalen was actually intended for Kohlschreiber, who has every spin and cut variant in his quiver. And used this profitably up to the tie-break of the first round. In the short decision, the 37-year-old quickly led with a mini-break, Rublev equalized to 4: 4. And didn't look back anymore.

The second set began with an early break by the Russian who, as number four, is the top-ranked remaining player in the tournament. Daniil Medvedev, the number one, had to admit defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in round one, Stefanos Tsitsipas was drawn into the tableau, but did not travel for personal reasons. And on Thursday it was over for number three: Alexander Zverev was inferior to a great Ugo Humbert.

Which also meant that hopes for a German home win rested on the shoulders of the 2011 champion. But Philipp Kohlschreiber didn't have a comeback that afternoon in Halle. And with reaching the quarter-finals after victories against Jurij Rodionov and Corentin Moutet, I can still draw a positive balance. Andrey Rublev, on the other hand, will face either Nikoloz Basilashvili or Lloyd Harris in the semifinals.
