ATP HalleWestfalen: Sinner has to cancel, Struff gets a wildcard

South Tyrol's tennis ace Jannik Sinner had to cancel his start at the 29th edition of the ATP Tour 500 tournament in HalleWestfalen. The Italian world number twelfth is still recovering from a knee injury that recently forced him to give up his French Open round of 16 against Andrey Rublev (ATP 8).

Jan-Lennard Struff gets a wild card for his home game

"I'm so sorry that I can't come to Halle. The tournament is well organized and has a real tradition," said the 20-year-old, who was eliminated in the first qualifying round in his only guest appearance at the ATP 500 grass classic in 2019.

The German professional contingent at the most important national tennis competition is being reinforced by local hero Jan-Lennard Struff . The Warsteiner, currently 103rd in the world rankings, received a wild card from tournament manager Ralf Weber. "I'm sure that Jan-Lennard will be raring to go on the court in front of the home fans and can also cause real surprises," said Weber.

Medvedev comes to HalleWestfalen as number one

In addition to Struff, Daniel Altmaier (ATP 59) and Oscar Otte (ATP 61) from Germany are currently in the main draw. Frontman Alexander Zverev is unable to compete in one of his favorite tournaments on the tour due to a ligament injury in his right foot sustained in the Paris semi-final against Rafael Nadal. In a video message for the TERRA WORTMANN OPEN fans, the 25-year-old from Hamburg regretted not being able to play for the title: "But I'm already looking forward to next year and the return to Halle."

Just in time for the start of the main draw, the top seeded Daniil Medvedev will move up to first place in the ATP world rankings next Monday. He takes over the top position - as he did in February 2022 - from Novak Djokovic (Serbia). Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title in the US Open final against Djokovic last year. The 26-year-old Muscovite leads a quartet of four top ten stars in Halle: In addition to Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece/ATP 5), Andrey Rublev (ATP 8) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (Canada/ATP 9) from the Elite group for the winner's trophy. One of the secret favorites at the 29th edition of the tournament is Australia's crackNick Kyrgios (ATP 78).
