Against the Briton Dan Evans, Zverev won after 1 hour and 37 minutes of play with 6: 3 and 7: 6 (3).

Both players exchanged two breaks right at the beginning, but Zverev then took the 3: 1 and fended off a chance to get ahead at 4: 2. Evans - decorated in Monte Carlo with a victory over Novak Djokovic - played good tennis, always mixing it up well, with his slice, with serve-and-volley interludes. /

At 4: 4 in the second set he won a close game after a strong defense and a breakballs for Zverev, the first in the entire second round, and for his part came up to debut for the first time, but Zverev freed himself with strong serves. In the tie-break, Zverev managed the decisive mini-break to 4: 3 with an energetic game and a good attack, in the end he got three match points - the first one was already there.

"He's a tricky opponent, even for the top players," said Zverev about Evans - also referring to his victory over Djokovic in Monte Carlo.

Zverev meets clay court king Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. "I won against him the last two times, but that was on hard court," said Zverev. "It's the greatest job in tennis: defeating Nadal on clay."

Zverev is still in impressive form after his quarter-finals. On Wednesday he had already set an exclamation point against Kei Nishikori with a dominant appearance.

Zverev had won the tournament in Madrid in 2018. At that time he won the final against Dominic Thiem.
