ATP Masters Monte Carlo: Goffin wins, Paire struggles, Koepfer creates qualification
David Goffin won the first main draw of the 2021 edition at the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo.

Goffin won against Marin Cilic 6: 4, 3: 6 and 6: 0 and was the first player to move into the Principality in Round 2.
Benoit Paire showed a little more commitment than last time. Despite various unsuccessful stops and without any body language, he gave Jordan Thompson a good fight and in the end only narrowly lost 4: 6, 7: 6 (3) and 6: 7 (5) - he got a break in the last set. Arrears at 5: 6, but did not make use of a 4: 2 lead in the tiebreaker.
Dominik Koepfer also qualified. The top seeded world number 54 won the final qualimatch against Juan Ignacio Londero 6: 1 and 6: 3. In the main draw he will meet Marco Cecchinato in lap 1 tomorrow. The Italian, who was a semi-finalist in Roland Garros in 2018, also played his way through the qualification. Yannick Hanfmann was eliminated: he was defeated by Alexei Popyrin 6: 3, 5: 7 and 4: 6.
