Sebastian Korda caused a surprise in Monte-Carlo

Sebastian Korda watched his first match point in disbelief: The young American had sent a forehand down the line and hit it a few centimeters behind the baseline. A few moments later, and after a total playing time of 3:02 hours, Korda was allowed to celebrate. Then his 7: 6 (2), 6: 7 (5), 6: 3 win against Carlos Alcaraz was certain.

A special success for Korda: a few weeks ago he already had the win against another Spaniard on his racket. Rafael Nadal made the comeback in Indian Wells back then. Not so Alcaraz, who had traveled to the principality from Miami as the winner. And thus one day after Novak Djokovic retired at the first 1000s of the year. Djokovic and Alcaraz would have met in the quarterfinals.

Korda now with a balanced record against Alcaraz

Korda, who won in straight sets against Botic van de Zandschulp in the opening match, now plays either Marin Cilic or Taylor Fritz. The balance sheet with Carlos Alcaraz is now 1-1. The Spaniard had won the only encounter so far last year in the final of the #NextGen Masters.

Alexander Zverev only intervened in the game in Monte Carlo later on Wednesday. The German, the highest-ranked player in the field after Djokovic's departure, starts against Federico Delbonis from Argentina.
