Alexander Zverev fought his way into the third round at the ATP Masters in Rome. The Hamburger won his emotional first match, which could only be played the following day due to the constant rain on Saturday in the Italian capital, 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 4 against the Belgian David Goffin. The 26-year-old meets American Jeffrey John Wolf on Monday.

Zverev, who continues to look for consistency after his serious ankle injury at the French Open last year, started well. After two missed set balls, the Hamburg player then collapsed and the Belgian turned the first round without much resistance.

It was only in the middle of the second set that Zverev regained control of the match and finally won the round with ease. After that, the 26-year-old, who reached the semi-finals in the Foro Italico last year and is playing for his position as Germany's number one this week, didn't give up.

Compatriot Yannick Hanfmann is also in the third round of the ATP 1000 tournament after a big surprise . The qualifier from Karlsruhe beat ninth in the world rankings Taylor Fritz from the USA 6:4 and 6:1 and will now play Italy's Marco Cecchinato on Monday. For Hanfmann it was only the second career success against a top ten player. Daniel Altmaier, on the other hand, lost to US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe 6: 3, 5: 7 and 3: 6.
