Jan-Lennard Struff was eliminated in the semifinals of the indoor tournament in St. Petersburg and has to wait for his first title on the ATP tour. The 31-year-old Warsteiner lost 7: 5, 1: 6, 3: 6 to the fifth seed American Taylor Fritz. In the previous round, Struff had surprisingly beaten the Canadian top player Denis Shapovalov.

Against Fritz, he initially followed up on the idea, his second final on the ATP tour after the clay court tournament in Munich in May was approaching. But Fritz, who last defeated Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) in Indian Wells, improved and won the second duel with Struff after almost two hours. The German won the first in Wimbledon in 2019.
