Sam Querrey was so excited about a start at the MercedesCup 2021 that he would even have started the qualification. After a couple of rejections, Querrey slipped into the main field - and took advantage of the opportunity. The American had no problems against Turkish qualifier Altug Celikbilek, as he did against James Duckworth from Australia on Thursday.
Dominic Stricker, on the other hand, had his place in the main field in Stuttgart from the start, although the 18-year-old is only classified in position 355 in the ATP world rankings. Stuttgart boss Edwin Weindorfer is a big fan of Stricker, so the wildcard went straight to Switzerland. And so far, Stricker has paid back this trust. With strong nerves, too: the teenager won two tiebreaks against Radu Albot and Hubert Hurkacz.
Querrey beats Thiem and Djokovic
The left-hander's game lives from his good serve - and from a forehand that brings an astonishing amount of acceleration. Against Hurkacz, Stricker often ventured into the net, repeatedly throwing in stops. Which would certainly also be a good remedy against the not quite so nimble Sam Querrey.
The problem with this, however: Querrey is considered an excellent lawn player. Dominic Thiem had to make this experience in Wimbledon 2019 in round one, Novak Djokovic caught it three years before against Querrey in the round of 16. So the roles seem to be very clearly distributed. But: If things had been going well for Sam Querrey lately, he would not have had to plan with qualifying in Stuttgart. Dominic Stricker certainly has a small chance against the veteran.
