Matteo Berrettini goes for the title hat-trick in Stuttgart 2023

Matteo Berrettini still has a snow-white vest at the Weissenhof! The Italian won the tournament at his Stuttgart premiere in 2019 without losing a set. When he played for the second time in June this year, the right-hander had to go the full distance of three sets three times after winning 6: 4, 5: 7, 6: 3 in a final that was as dramatic as it was high-class over Scotland's Andy Murray However, Berrettini was able to celebrate his second title in Stuttgart. In the coming year he will be aiming for the hat-trick and could draw level with Rafael Nadal, who is the only player to have won three times at Weissenhof (2005, 2007 on clay, 2015 on grass).

For Berrettini, this year's triumph was very emotional in two ways. On the one hand, he won the Weissenhof tournament, which was held for the first time as a BOSS OPEN. On the other hand, he celebrated his comeback in Stuttgart after a hand operation that entailed a three-month break. No wonder the Roman fought back tears of joy after the match point was converted: "This victory feels even more special than my first success three years ago. It was a tough week mentally, but I fought and now I've won. This title means a lot to me.”

Berrettini on grass a power

It goes without saying that he would like to be the BOSS at the Weissenhof in 2023. Not only his 9-0 match win record in Stuttgart speaks for this, but also his quality on grass. Berrettini has not only won twice in Stuttgart, but also the lawn tournament in London's Queen's Club (2021, 2022). Last year he also stormed into the Wimbledon final. “I have special memories of Stuttgart and feel very comfortable at the Weissenhof. The atmosphere is great and the fans are very passionate. Of course it will be difficult to win the tournament a third time, but that's my big goal," said Berrettini, whose best place in the world rankings with sixth place dates from January 2022.

“We are delighted to welcome Matteo Berrettini, an absolute top star, to the BOSS OPEN 2023. He plays highly attractive tennis and thus inspires fans worldwide. In addition, he would like to add the next chapter to his impressive success story in Stuttgart in the coming year,” explains tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
