The one US Open semi-finalist had just left the field as a winner, there was already the next on the center court of the Wiener Stadthalle. After Matteo Berrettini, Grigor Dimitrov also wanted to take the first hurdle in Vienna and move on to the second round, thus ensuring a duel between the two New York semi-finalists.
Said and done. Dimitrov allowed the Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur three breaks in 6: 3 and 7: 5, but he managed to score five and ultimately moved into the next round. "Playful was not everything perfect today, but the best part of the day was my dominance on the pitch," said Dimitrov after the win. But against Berrettini, the Bulgarian will still have to increase properly.
Khachanov survives weak phase in set two
The program was decided on the Center Court by Karen Khachanov and Hubert Hurkacz. A surprise from Poland seemed realistic before the match began, but Khachanov, who was second in Vienna, played world-class tennis in stages and won the match 6: 4 and 7: 6 (3).

Even from a brief period of weakness in the second set, when Hurkacz made up two breaks and even fought off a match point at the score of 3: 5, the Russian did not let himself get bogged down and eventually finished as a deserved winner. In the next round, the world ranking ninth will face Marton Fucsovics, who beat Lorenzo Sonego in two sets earlier in the day.
The first main field day of the ATP tournament in Vienna is therefore history again in 2019. On Tuesday, the Austrian fans will get their money's worth for the first time. Dominic Thiem does not get it before 17:30 before sold-out house with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to do .
