The clay court tournament in Hamburg is the oldest tennis tournament in Germany and is taking place for the 116th time this year. For the first time since 1978 as a "Combined Event", various top players are expected at this year's Hamburg European Open, including the German former top 10 player Andrea Petkovic, who will again take on the role of tournament ambassador this year. Also present are the Paris semi-finalist Daria Kasatkina and the 2021 Roland Garros winner Barbora Krejcikova.

Men's tennis is also at the top of the game: On Wednesday evening, further participants were announced, including German tennis ace Oscar Otte and the new Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old leads the field of players at the Hamburg tournament as seventh in the world rankings, closely followed by the Rothenbaum winner of 2020 Andrey Rublev. South Tyrolean Jannik Sinner, Munich winner Holger Rune, defending champion Elena-Gabriela Ruse and world number eight Danielle Collins are also registered for the tournament.
