The Favroit prevailed in the German round of 16 at the Hamburg European Open: In the last game of the day on the Center Court at Rothenbaum in Hamburg, Alexander Zverev defeated Maximilian Marterer from Nuremberg 6: 3, 7: 5 after 77 minutes of play and is now third times in his hometown in the last eight. There the ex-world number two has to deal with the Frenchman Luca Van Assche.

Far chance of the first win at home

Zverev left no doubts right at the beginning of the game late in the evening and took the serve directly from Marterer, after which the German number one dominated the game without having to shine with his own good service. In the end, Zverev - seeded number four - then used his first match ball.

Zverev is back at Rothenbaum for the first time since 2019 and is hoping for his first win at his home tournament. Four years ago he had reached the semi-finals, just like when he made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2014. "This tournament will always remain a piece of home," he said before the start, "after all, I grew up around the corner."
