Knowle had actually traveled to Australia as coach of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, but was unable to pursue this work due to Mies' injury. So that all the effort was worth it, the 46-year-old Knowle celebrated a short comeback at the side of Lloyd Harris. That ended with a 2-6, 4-6 defeat against Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

On the other hand, Philipp Oswald, who is in the round of 16 with his standard partner Marcus Daniell, is still in the race. Oswald / Daniell defeated Dominik Koepfer and Tennys Sandgren 7: 6 (4), 6: 7 (3) and 6: 4 and are now playing against the two Americans Nicolas Monroe and Francis Tiafoe.

Oliver Marach , the third Austrian who had called for the doubles in Melbourne, had already failed in round one with Robin Haase.
