Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna in Melbourne on Saturday

What a wonderful story! Rohan Bopanna had to be 43 years old to win his first doubles title at a Grand Slam tournament. This Saturday the time had come: Together with Matthew Ebden, who had already won Wimbledon with Max Purcell in 2022, Bopanna beat the two Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7:6 (0) and 7:5. And after the match point, which he used with a smash, he sank to the ground with joy.

It had already been clear for a few days that Bopanna and Ebden would be at the top of the doubles world rankings from Monday. Rohan Bopanna will then be the oldest premiere industry leader.

Ebden, in turn, continued a remarkable series for the Australians: Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios won in 2022, and Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler won last year.
