The Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff sent signals to the competition at the start of the Australian Open. Pegula needed just 59 minutes to beat Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 6-1. Gauff didn't miss a beat against Katerina Siniakova either and won 6:1, 6:4.

Both Pegula and Gauff are still chasing their first Grand Slam title and are among the extended group of contenders in Melbourne. Pegula recently caused a stir with a clear two-set win against world number one Iga Swiatek in the United Cup. So far, the 28-year-old has ended in the quarterfinals at the latest in the majors. Gauff, ten years younger than her compatriot, was in a Grand Slam final for the first time at the French Open in 2022, but was clearly defeated by Swiatek.

Korpatsch and Lys out

However, the two German starters Eva Lys and Tamara Korpatsch have already failed. While the former surprisingly had to give up, Korpatsch was able to keep up well against Emma Raducanu at times, but ultimately had to admit defeat in two sets. The US Open winner from 2021 now meets Coco Gauff in a second round cracker.

Bianca Andreescu has already secured a ticket for the second round: the Canadian put in a flawless performance against Marie Bouzkova and made it into the round of 64 with 6:2 and 6:4.
