The 18-year-old beat Hayley Baptiste 6-0, 6-4 in the qualifying final and is now in the main draw of a major tournament for the first time. On the way there, Seidel first beat Elisabeth Mandlik and then Francesca Jones, each in three sets.

In the main field, Seidel can now compete directly with a really big player: she was drawn to Aryna Sabalenka, defending champion in Melbourne and current number 2 in the world. The match is scheduled for the night session on Sunday.

Eva Lys narrowly missed qualifying

However, Eva Lys narrowly missed out: she lost to Leolia Jeanjean 6:2, 6:7 (4) and 3:6. Bitter: Lys had a match point on her own serve when the score was 6:5 in the second set and also led 4:2 in the tiebreak. Lys now has the chance to move up as a lucky loser.

Top seed Dayana Yastremska, number 2 Renata Zarazua and third seed Katie Volynets also made it into the main field. Likewise the young Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova, who followed her directly qualified sister Linda.
