Jule Niemeier missed the hoped-for revenge against Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open. The 23-year-old from Dortmund lost to the world number one from Poland in their first round duel on Monday 4:6, 5:7.

At the US Open in New York, the German number one had already challenged Swiatek in the round of 16 and lost in three sets. "Of course I want revenge and win the match," Niemeier said in Melbourne, but she was unable to implement her plan.

Previously, Grand Slam debutante Eva Lys and Tamara Korpatsch (both Hamburg) were eliminated. Lys lost to the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa 6: 2, 0: 6, 2: 6, Korpatsch had to admit defeat to the British Emma Raducanu, US Open winner of 2021, 3: 6, 2: 6.
