The next milestone in Alexander Zverev's career has been reached: for the first time, German number one is on the tennis tour in the final round of one of the four largest tournaments. Zverev defeated Stan Wawrinka 1-6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 2 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and will face either Rafael Nadal or Dominic Thiem on Friday.

Wawrinka initially followed where he had left off against Daniil Medvedev the previous round. The Swiss dominated from the baseline, leaving his opponent with little chance of getting into the match. Zverev quickly ticked off the false start in the Rod Laver Arena, got into the match better. And benefited from the fact that Wawrinka now made significantly more mistakes. The German immediately used the break to 5: 3 in the second set to equalize the sentence and also started the third act with a break. That the Swiss countered immediately. Zverev was not irritated, took the champion's serve again from 2014.

Zverev against Nadal or Thiem

In the fourth set, all locks were open until 4: 0 for Zverev: The Hamburg native played rock solid, Wawrinka had no ideas how he could turn the match again. Even if the Swiss was able to fend off three breakballs again. The problems that Alexander Zverev had to deal with at the ATP Cup earlier in the year were blown away. The 22-year-old finished the game easily after 2:18 hours of play. And moved into the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

There Zverev is now waiting for the winner of the game between Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, who face each other in the last quarter-finals on Wednesday. The Spaniard leads in the direct record with 9: 4 wins. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic had already qualified for the semi-final on Tuesday.
