Who are the favourites?

There is probably no way around Novak Djokovic for men. The Serb is aiming for his tenth title at the Australian Open, Djokovic has not lost a match in Australia since 2018. In the women's race, Iga Swiatek is the favorite. However, the Pole lost quite easily to Jessica Pegula at the United Cup.

Who are the defending champions?

Ashleigh Barty won the women's title last year - and a few weeks later announced her retirement from active tennis. So there could be a debut winner here (Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka have won at least once in Melbourne). In 2022, Rafael Nadal was able to beat Daniil Medvedev after a 2-0 set deficit and win his 21st major title.

Who is missing from the Australian Open 2023?

The number one in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, will not be there. The Spaniard is ruled out with a leg injury. Otherwise, with the exception of Gael Monfils, all the big names are represented among the men. As expected, Naomi Osaka, two-time winner of the Australian Open, will be absent from the women's tableau.
