Andy Murray may still be outside the top 100 in the current ATP world rankings, but this has not diminished the Scot's appeal to fans. Murray's first-round success against Nikoloz Basilashvili was enthusiastically celebrated (as was his entry into the final in Sydney last week) - and on Thursday, too, the spectators in Melbourne were mostly in the veteran's camp. But what was not enough in the end: Murray lost against Taro Daniel 4: 6, 4: 6 and 4: 6 and has to travel home from Australia.

Murray was by no means without a chance, but missed several opportunities on Daniel's serve at the beginning of the second round to turn the match around. The Japanese, who played his way into the main draw through qualification, will meet either Jannik Sinner or Steve Johnson in the third round.

Félix Auger-Aliassime delivered another thriller. The Canadian had to go through five sets against Emil Ruusuvuori at the start, and Auger-Aliassime won 7: 6 (4), 6: 7 (4), 7: 6 (5) and 7: 6 (4th minute) against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina ). The next opponent will be Daniel Evans, who went on without a fight against Arthur Rinderknech.
