Angelique Kerbe r has reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open after a tough fight. The 2016 tournament winner wrestled the Italian Camila Giorgi in the Margaret Court Arena with 6: 2, 6: 7 (7), 6: 3 and now faces Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia / No. 30).

"It is great to be in Melbourne in the second week. It was a tough fight," said Kerber, who had to make a set against number 102 in the world rankings in the third tournament match for the first time. The 32-year-old from Kiel is the last of five German women to start the second week of the tournament. It is their first round of 16 at a Grand Slam since the Australian Open last year.

Kerber with lightning start

In her third consecutive win at Melbourne Park, Kerber also benefited from a total of 65 so-called slight mistakes by her opponent, who took every risk with every stroke. Giorgi made eight double mistakes in the first set alone, Kerber, who made a total of only 16 avoidable mistakes, used this for three breaks and after 26 minutes to win the first round.

The three-time Grand Slam winner got into trouble when 28-year-old Giorgi put her hard strokes into the field more permanently. This was rarely the case in the first set, but in the second round the Italian, who had defeated Antonia Lottner (Düsseldorf) in the first round, became more and more confident. Most of the time Kerber could only react.

Nevertheless, Giorgi's error rate remained so high that she repeatedly embarrassed herself and lost a good starting position. With her 62nd "unforced error" she gave Kerber the decisive break to 5: 3 in the third set. After 2:08 hours she also took Kerber's first match point.

Last year Kerber had failed in the round of 16 in Melbourne. At the time, she lost to Danielle Collins (USA) 0: 6, 2: 6. Then she was eliminated in the French Open and the US Open in the first round, in between she failed in Wimbledon in the second round.
