"It was a tough match. It hits a lot of balls very hard and fast," said Kerber, emphasizing: "I wanted to play my game, I wanted to bring back a lot of balls. I tried to play good tennis."

In fact, Kerber was not consistently convincing against number 139 in the world rankings. She and her 21 year old opponent lost their serve several times, there were six breaks in the first set alone. However, Kerber made far fewer uncommon mistakes than Hon, who is often too busy playing.

Kerber did not want to give a forecast for the further course of the tournament after the match: "I take the round after round. You have to be ready for every single opponent."

Previously, Laura Siegemund had been a German player, but the Stuttgart player lost to Karolina Pliskova in two sets. Also in the third round are Belinda Bencic from Switzerland and the two-time major winner Garbine Muguruza.
