Bianca Andreescu missed the Australian Open

Setback for the organizers of the Australian Open around tournament director Craig Tiley: As she announced on social media on Monday, Bianca Andreescu will not take part in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. After a "very challenging" two years, the 21-year-old needs some more time for herself.

The events of this year in particular had left their mark on her, said the Canadian: Andreescu had to be quarantined in both Melbourne and Madrid, and her grandmother ended up in intensive care after a corona infection. Therefore "I didn't feel like myself on many days".

Andreescu added that this condition mainly occurred on the tennis court. "I felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders." Therefore, they still need some time to be ready for the coming season.

The Australian Open will therefore take place without the 2019 US Open winner. At the beginning of this year Andreescu was eliminated from the major event in Melbourne in the second round against Su-Wei Hsieh.
