Bianca Andreescu cannot follow in the footsteps of Naomi Osaka this time: The Canadian had succeeded Osaka as the winner of the US Open, and now this would also be at the Australian Open. There, however, Andreescu will not start due to a still not fully healed knee injury, as she announced on Twitter.

Andreescu actually wanted to start her season in Auckland, where she had reached the final last year as a qualifier. The start in New Zealand broke due to the knee complaints that had already hindered them at the WTA Finals, as well as the appearance at the Australian Open. It can be assumed that Bianca Andreescu will now return to the tour at the hard court tournaments in the spring. There she had surprisingly won her first title last year in Indian Wells, with a final win over Angelique Kerber.
