For one sentence, Richard Gasquet once again showed the fans in the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne what has made him an absolute top player over the last two decades. Not only, but also his wonderful one-handed backhand. After losing the tiebreak, however, the Frenchman had used up his powder. And Carlos Alcaraz, number two in the tournament, found his rhythm.

It took 72 minutes for Alcaraz to win the close tiebreak 7:5. The second act, on the other hand, only took half an hour. And in the third and final game there were no more thoughts of a game change. Gasquet fended off Alcaraz's first match point with a forehand and immediately afterwards had another break point at 2:5. Alcaraz then took advantage of his fifth chance to win - with an ace.

In round two it is for Carlos Alcaraz now against Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian was able to hold his own against Daniel Evans in four sets.
