"I could imagine that the next match will be much better," Kohlmann told SID after the "good step" of the previously injured German top player, who beat Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas in five sets.
Kohlmann perceived the movement sequences of the Olympic champion, who now meets Michael Mmoh (USA) or Laurent Lokoli (France), as "not so round". But this is normal after more than seven months of forced break.
In the coming round, in which Zverev again has a very good chance, Kohlmann would prefer an aggressive style of play. "He just has to make sure he plays offensively because it's always easier to move on offense than on defense," said the 49-year-old. Zverev's coach Sergi Bruguera also sees it that way, said Kohlmann: "The more matches he gets, the faster it will go."
Germany with Zverev against Switzerland
Looking at the total of five German men, the national coach was not satisfied with just one win in the first round. Jan-Lennard Struff, Yannick Hanfmann, Daniel Altmaier and Oscar Otte had lost their opening games.
"Of course I would have wished that one or the other would have won another round here. Also with regard to the Davis Cup, which is directly afterwards." The German team meets on 3./4. February in Trier on Switzerland.
