Dominic Thiem receives Austrian support in the main competition of the Australian Open: His best friend Dennis Novak also made the leap into the main draw with a confident 7: 6 (5) and 6: 2 victory over the Japanese Hiroki Moriya.

At the beginning it looked anything but good for the 26-year-old: Moriya managed the first break to 2-1 and was the better player for long stretches of the first set. Novak took the world ranking 212. but in time the serve to 4: 4 and in the subsequent tie break converted his third set point with an ace.

Fifth major major competition for Novak

Novak took the swing of the set win into the second round and managed an early double break. Moriya should not recover from this: After a little less than 90 minutes of play, Novak was the winner and thus also the main field participant. Who the Austrian will meet in the first round of the main competition will be drawn on Saturday.

Novak is the fifth time in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament. At the Australian Open, the 26-year-old was initially granted this: in 2018, Novak failed in the first round in three sets to Grigor Dimitrov.

There was less good news from the Austrian women: Barbara Haas suffered a clear defeat in the last qualifying round .
