If you want to beat Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, you should do so before the semifinals. Once the Serb has reached the preliminary round, the signs for the respective opponents are on the verge of doom. So did a slightly battered Roger Federer on Thursday, who despite some inspired phases ultimately had no chance to prevent Djokovic's eighth success in his eighth Melbourne semi-final. 7: 6 (1), 6: 4 and 6: 3 ended up being the defending champion, who now leads Federer with 27:23 wins.

Federer got off to a strong start, quickly took the lead with 4: 1, but missed three chances for 5: 1 when Djokovic served. That should take revenge, as the seven-time winner got the match under control. Even if the statistics at the end of the first sentence showed 25 winning strikes for Federer - and only five for Djokovic. He played almost perfectly, even in the tie-break, which Djokovic surely won. In the following two sets, the favorite was then given a break, Federer had no chance of a comeback. After 2:18 hours of play, Djokovic used his first match ball.

Djokovic is waiting for the winner of the match between Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev, who will meet on Friday (live at Eurosport from 09:30, in Austria on ServusTV and in our live ticker). Djokovic lost to Thiem in five sets at the French Open 2019. After he was able to defeat Zverev smoothly in the quarterfinals.
