After the premiere duel with Mikhail Kukushkin, Dominic Thiem also met a man in the second round of the Australian Open with Dominik Koepfer, against whom he had not yet played. As in his opening game, the Austrian therefore needed some time to adjust to the German's game.

From his point of view, Koepfer found two breakballs in the first set when the score was 3: 2, but could not use them. It should remain the last two options for the German - Thiem took the world number 70. in the next game the serve and bagged set one a little later with 6: 4.

Thiem now against Kyrgios or Humbert

Then the Austrian, who had made a few mistakes in the first run, shifted up a few gears and distributed the maximum penalty in the second set. The third section continued in a similar tone: Thiem unpacked the tennis that had brought him to the finals in Australia, New York and London last year and quickly took a 4-0 lead.

Only then - and after eleven lost games in a row - was Koepfer again granted a game win. However, it was only a brief riot for the 26-year-old. Thiem secured the clear 6: 4, 6: 0 and 6: 2 success after 98 minutes of play. In the third round, the world number three will meet Nick Kyrgios or Ugo Humbert.
