In the run-up to the game against Fritz, Dominic Thiem had two secondary locations in addition to the sporting challenge: out of nothing there was a little question mark behind the fitness of the Austrian due to a cold, on the other hand Thomas Muster was missing both in training and in the box of the 26th olds.

Unimpressed by this, Thiem made a strong start and took his 22-year-old opponent twice in the first round. With its own service, the fifth in the world rankings acted almost untouchable and so Thiem section one could confidently win with 6: 2.

After an early break in the second set, the Lichtenwörther had problems out of nowhere with its own service and kept Fritz coming up with some small options. Overall, Thiem was able to fend off six breakballs and, despite some problems, transported the break lead to the 2-0 set lead.

In the third round, both players saw no country in their return games. Consequently, it went into a tie-break, in which the American quickly settled and finally turned his fourth set ball to 7: 6 (5).

In the fourth set, the audience at Margaret Court Arena initially saw a similar picture, but Thiem then made it completely out of nothing and made it 4-2. At least as surprising, the Austrian had to give up his serve for the first time in the game a few minutes later - so everything was back in line.

After a competitive serve game, Thiem forced Fritz to serve against the loss of the match. The American could not withstand this pressure: After a double error, the 6: 2, 6: 4, 6: 7 (5) and 6: 4 victory of the Austrian was certain.

"I'm really happy about the win. There were two very tight games against him at the US Open twice. In the second set, I was a bit lucky with the many breakballs," said Thiem after the match.

In the round of 16 Thiem will face Gael Monfils. The Frenchman beat Ernests Gulbis in three sets, but is one of the Austrian's favorite opponents. In five duels, Thiem was just as often the winner. ( The match against Fritz can be found in our live ticker ).
