Dominic Thiem saves himself from qualifying at the Australian Open. As the Austrian revealed in an interview with "Eurosport" , he would receive a wild card for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year if necessary. The 29-year-old is currently in seventh place on the list of replacements, so many cancellations seem unlikely from the current perspective.

Thiem no longer has to worry about his place in the main draw anyway. "If it doesn't work out, I'll get a wildcard," said the world number 105, who thanked Tennis Australia and tournament director Craig Tiley: "It's an incredibly big help."

Thiem, who reached the final at the Australian Open 2020, is currently preparing for the coming season at an exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia. The Lower Austrian lost his first match against Alexander Zverev in two sets, and he will continue in doubles on Friday.

Meanwhile, Thiem will make his first official tour appearance at the top-class ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide. "If it is necessary, I will qualify there," said the 2020 US Open winner.
